Audiology and Hearing Aids
Audiology, (derived from the Latin audire, to hear) is the branch of social science that studies hearing, balance and related disorders.
It’s practitioners who treat those with hearing loss and pro-actively prevent related damage are audiologists. Persons specialising in hearing aid fitting and rehabilitation are registered hearing aid dispensers.
Hearing loss affects about 1 in 5 of the population and 50% of people over the age of 60 have a hearing loss (presbyacusis). Also, on average it takes people 7 years from the time they think they might have a hearing loss to the time they actually seek treatment.
